“The world’s a playground. You know that when you’re a kid, but somewhere along the way, everyone forgets it.”
- Yes Man (2008)
Inspired by Japanese wood joinery, the mortise and tenon details are married with the architectural possibilities of mass timber building technology. The result is a high-rise building that is composed of a children’s museum and a playscape that strives to remind everyone of the joy of naivety.
The color scheme considers the pedagogical mission of the building type. Primary colors of red, blue, and yellow coat the modular rooms’ interior space. Each room is made up of a different part of the program, e.g., exhibition space, finger painting room, and a media room with a story-telling room. As users transition between the themed rooms, the secondary colors coat the slides and bridges. With the varying scales of the modules, furniture, and floor patterns, and the variety of programs, the building is a playground that engages with all audiences.
